Jakob Sauer Jørgensen Limited-data X-ray tomography and sparsity regularization at RAL (Harwell Campus) Abstract: In this seminar I will give an overview of some recent results and ongoing projects within limited-data X-ray tomographic reconstruction and sparsity regularization. First, I will describe a special limited angle tomography problem in which metal bar sample holders cause cone-shaped parts missing in the sinogram. I will describe our attempts of characterizing and preliminary results of removing the resulting artifacts. Next, I will present a projection matching algorithm for automatically aligning tomographic projections of unknown exact orientation. In the present case we are interested in ultra-high resolution tomographic reconstruction from ptychography data. Currently, unknown sample translations and rotations at the nano-scale for example caused by vibration limit the achievable reconstruction quality. I will show preliminary results with simulated and real synchrotron ptychography data. Finally, I will mention our attempts of establishing a connection between image sparsity and the amount of undersampling admitted by sparsity-regularized reconstrution methods. In particular, I will describe simulation results suggesting how one may predict the sufficient number of projections to acquire based on the sparsity level of the scanned object. I will then point to a potential follow-up study for validation on real data using the SophiaBeads? data set recently released from the University of Manchester

Dr Biao Cai (Research Complex at Harwell) "Alloy solidification under external fields via time-resolved synchrotron tomographic quantification" Room 3.306 Abstract: Applying external fields/forces, including magnetic field, mechanical deformation and thermal gradient, to solidification processes can manipulate solidifying microstructures of alloys, which promises to significantly improve the properties of finial engineering components. The recent advancements of high speed synchrotron X-ray tomography provide a unique opportunity to obtain further understanding into how solidifying alloys respond to external fields in a quantitative manner. The talk will highlight our recent work on the usage of high speed X-ray tomography, combined with bespoke in situ rigs (the thermo-mechanical rig P2R and, and the temperature gradient furnace MagDS), to investigate alloy solidification under various external fields, focusing on the application of deformation. Advanced tomographic quantification methods applied to those time-resolved 4D datasets, including digital volume correlation and image-based modelling, allow us to resolve the microstructure development in detail, revealing key mechanisms determining the responses of semi-solid microstructures when external fields are imposed.

14/12/2015 - 15:00

Held at the RAL Atlas Visualisation Facility Tomography-and-Coffee (Harwell Campus). "This session will also announce the launch of the new CCPi website (www.ccpi.ac.uk Tomographic Imaging). With new license services being negotiated we are looking again at the Avizo VR toolkit: this provides an opportunity to explore your data interactively in 3D. Contact srikanth.nagella@stfc.ac.uk to discuss data transfer prior to the event or just turn up to see and discuss.
