Title: Recent development in dimensional X-ray computed tomography at NPL for advanced manufacturing Advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing (AM), have the ability to incorporate complex external and internal geometries. Parts manufactured by AM also have complex surface textures comparing to machined parts. The complexity of structure and surface texture presents significant challenges to conventional contact (tactile) and non-contact (optical) measurement techniques. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) has capability to image both external and internal geometries of AM components non-destructively. The technology has been increasingly used for dimensional measurement purposes in industry in recent years. However, robust methods to establish traceability and uncertainty for measurements using XCT are not presently available. At the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), work is being undertaken to establish a traceable dimensional metrology infrastructure for XCT for advanced manufacturing. This talk will introduce some of the recent XCT projects being carried out at NPL and various challenges encountered.
